HMPV Virus Signs And Symptoms: China is struck with another pandemic-like situation with an outbreak of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) which has left hospitals and crematories overcrowded. Videos that surfaced on social media platforms have taken the internet by storm and have created a lot of panic. As per media reports, multiple viruses — including influenza A, HMPV, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Covid-19 — are spreading simultaneously. Sources suggest that China has declared a state of emergency due to the outbreak, although authorities have not confirmed this.
With the outbreak of the HMPV virus, a common question arises - what are the signs and symptoms to watch out for and who all are at risk? As the internet is flooded with too much information and misinformation, we got in touch with health experts who reveal symptoms we need to watch out for to keep our health in check.

What Is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV Virus)?

On December 27, China's disease control authority announced that it was keeping an eye on pneumonia cases of unknown origin, with respiratory illnesses expected to rise during the winter. They shared data showing an increase in respiratory infections between December 16 and 22. China’s health authorities confirm that a virus is spreading across northern parts of the country, with the northern region being the worst affected.

Signs And Symptoms Of HMPV Virus

Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology, CK Birla Hospital Gurugram shares that the HMPV virus resembles other respiratory infections. Symptoms such as:
- Coughing,
- Fever,
- Nasal discharge, and
- Sore throats have been observed in affected patients.
A few experience difficulty breathing, wheezing, and chest pains. Some signs may appear to be evident only in infants or aged persons and lead to complications of pneumonia or bronchitis.

Who Is At Risk Of HMPV Virus?

Dr Grover explains that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus, which affects people of all ages; however, it is more complicated for young children, elderly patients, and others with weak immunity. The way it spreads is also very similar to that of the common cold or flu, through coughing, sneezing, and touching contaminated surfaces.
“People with previous illnesses, especially for respiratory issues including asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), can experience triggers by HMPV, so it must be taken very specially by those categories of people, but a new virus nonetheless, and to reduce its virulence, vigilance remains the key,” Dr Sulaiman Ladhani, Pulmonologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central said.

Precautionary Measures For Pregnant WomenHMPV can pose significant risks during pregnancy, potentially leading to preterm birth and small-for-gestational-age babies. Dr Ladhani explains that for newborns, it is particularly concerning as it may cause severe respiratory issues, including pneumonia and an increased risk of respiratory failure. Preventive measures such as good hand hygiene, avoiding contact with sick patients, and maintaining overall respiratory health are essential. If symptoms arise, prompt medical evaluation is critical.

Should India Be Worried?

At present, HMPV cases have only been reported in China, with no cases detected in India or other countries. The severity of the virus in China remains unclear, but it is advisable to follow basic precautions to prevent infections.
