Short for intelligence quotient, an IQ is a measure of a person’s mental ability and how it compares to that of their peers
Ten-year-old British Indian boy, Krish Arora achieved an IQ of 162, surpassing the estimated scores of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking - thought to be around 160. The score has placed Krish among the top one per cent of most intelligent people across the world.
According to a news report in Metro, Krish has now been accepted into Mensa - 'a stimulating, intellectual and social society' and is also set to join the prestigious Queen Elizabeth's School in September, one of the country's top grammar schools.
Achieved 100 per cent in math, though was too easy
Krish scored a mind-blowing 100 per cent in math, which he thought was "too easy." Now, he is looking forward to starting at his new school, hoping it will provide a more suitable challenge for his exceptional abilities.
Krish, who lives in Hounslow, is not just academically gifted but is also a genius in music, having won awards as a pianist. He currently holds a 7th grade piano certification, demonstrating his exceptional musical prowess.
What is an IQ level?
Short for intelligence quotient, an IQ is a measure of a person’s mental ability and how it compares to that of their peers. Popularized in the 1900s by French psychologist Alfred Binet, a person’s IQ level is measured using standardized testing, which is administered by licensed psychologists. Common standardized IQ tests include:
- Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V)
- Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults (WAIS-IV)
- Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales, Fifth Edition (SB5)
Can your IQ determine your intelligence?
Your IQ level is the measure of your reasoning ability along with spatial visualization, memory, and quantitative analysis. While these can be important markers of intelligence, they are not the only ones. Moreover, cognitive intelligence alone is not the only predictor of a person’s intelligence or success in life.
According to experts, various biological, social, and environmental factors determine how a person may score on an IQ test at any time and how a person’s life turns out irrespective of their IQ measurement. It includes the person’s health, genetic history, social or economic status, access to education, and more.
How can you boost your child’s IQ?
Activities that help you improve in various areas like reasoning, planning, and problem-solving include:
Memory activities
These not only help improve memory but can also enhance reasoning and language skills, which are both used as intelligence measures, meaning that memory activities can continue to develop intelligence.
Activities that involve memory training include jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, and card games.
Visuospatial reasoning activities
Visuospatial reasoning involves the mental processes related to physical representations. For example, reading and interpreting a map involves visual and spatial reasoning and processing.
Relational skills
Relational Frame Theory relates to human cognition and language development through relational associations.
Relational frame theory argues that the building block of human language and higher cognition is relating, i.e., the human ability to create bidirectional links between things.
Music
According to studies, just 75 minutes of music lessons every week for 12 weeks can significantly increase IQ scores in preschool-aged children. Also, instrumental music training improves executive functioning in children ages 6-7 years.
