Also known as accessory breasts or polymastia, having three breasts is not a natural phenomenon but is possible through surgeries. According to experts, the surgery, known as tissue expansion, helps create a new breast in the space between the other two. “A technique known as a tissue expander is used in such cases with balloon-like equipment which is inserted between two breasts,” Dr. Mithun Panchal, a renowned cosmetic surgeon, said on his Instagram channel.
According to Dr. Mithun, even though it is not a very popular cosmetic surgery, many women undergo the process.
“A saline is injected into the space created for the third breast, and as and when the space gets created, the area stretches the skin to the maximum. A breast implant is then added there, creating a third breast,” he added.
The US Food and Drug Administration approved a highly cohesive silicone gel breast implant for use in 2012. These implants are commonly called gummy bear breast implants. When cut in half, they retain their shape, similar to a gummy bear candy.

US woman grabbed headlines with three breasts

In 2019, a US woman made headlines around the world when she revealed she paid thousands of dollars to get a third breast surgically attached to her chest. Jasmine Tridevil, a social media star with a three-breast prosthe paid around $70,000.
The Florida-based Youtuber said initially all plastic surgery clinics were shocked by her request and declined.

What is polymastia?

According to Science Direct, Polymastia describes the presence of more than two breasts in human beings. It is synonymous with supernumerary or accessory breast tissue which has the potential to undergo the same benign and malignant changes as normal pectoral breast tissue.
Experts say accessory axillary breast tissue is the most common type of polymastia, accounting for 60-70 per cent of all ectopic breast tissue. Also, a few other reported locations include the parasternal, subscapular, and vulvar regions.

Why do people get breast implants?

Many of those who get breast implants wish to make the size of their breasts larger. You may want to enlarge the size of your breasts for many reasons, a few of which include:

Restoring a previous breast size

Breasts can decrease in size after pregnancy, weight loss, or ageing.

Correcting asymmetrical shape

Breast asymmetry is common, but it may be more prominent if you experience damage to the tissue in one of your breasts before you go through puberty.

Restoring breasts after a mastectomy

In women who have had their breasts removed because of cancer or any other serious health condition, breast implants restore feminine features and help them feel complete.

Affirming gender

Breasts help you accurately express your gender identity.

Boosting confidence

Breast implants can help improve your self-esteem and body image.

How long do breast implants last?

Doctors say new breast implants typically last about ten years, but every individual’s experience may be different. The older that breast implants get, the more likely they are to rupture and break apart.
Signs of breast implant rupture may include changes in your breast size or shape, firmness, or swelling. However, sometimes there is no sign that a rupture has occurred.
