Fabulous Lives vs Bollywood Wives star Maheep Kapoor has opened up about her diagnosis of Type-1 diabetes on the show. In a scene, she recalled a time when her blood sugar level shot up to 700. She explained how she got diagnosed with Type-1 diabetes in March 2022, after getting Covid.
While this may seem a little usual - as diabetes has no connection with Covid - many studies have claimed that people who were hospitalised with Covid-19 have developed diabetes. In November 2020, a global analysis published in the journal Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism revealed that up to 14.4% of people who were hospitalised with severe COVID-19 also developed diabetes. But how is that possible?

Why Is There A Surge In Diabetes Cases After COVID?

"People may be at higher risk of developing high blood sugar levels after the COVID-19 pandemic. Risk factors can include physical inactivity, unhealthy food choices, eating more sugary foods, taking too much stress and not sleeping well. However, more concrete research needs to be done to prove the significant link between the pandemic and developing high blood sugar levels," says Dr Jinendra Jain, Consultant Physician, Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road.
He further explained how diabetes has become one of the most common health concerns in India. "Diabetes is a type of chronic disease that usually occurs when your body is unable to manage or control blood sugar levels. According to the studies and research, there have been increasing cases of diabetes. Various factors can contribute to this condition. This can include increased stress, inflammation lifestyle habits, and choices during or after the pandemic," saus Dr Jinendra.

How To Stay Protected?

With proactive measures, one can easily lower their risk of getting diagnosed with diabetes in later life. Individuals are advised to focus on their dietary habits and try to eat clean. Incorporate plenty of green vegetables and fruits into your diet. Make sure you stay physically active. Taking too much stress can be harmful to your body. One can try stress-relieving techniques like meditation, and deep-breathing exercises. Do not skip your regular health checkups as they provide valuable insight into your overall health as well as your blood sugar levels.
