Since Dussehra, Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 281 making it one of the most polluted cities in the country.
Exposure to air pollution can affect lung health severely and lead to respiratory problems. It may also lead to difficulty in breathing, allergy flare-ups, asthma, and other lung-related health issues.
But with the right strategies we can keep our lung health in check. As per experts by adopting the right lifestyle practices and eating a balanced diet with a lot of antioxidants and nutrients. How To Fight Air Pollution And Protect Lungs?
We got in touch with Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology , CK Birla Hospital Gurugram who shares air pollution or smog poses a major threat to health and climate worldwide, as the presence of one or more contaminants such as dust, gas, fog, odours, smoke and vapor in the air can be hazardous to health. The air quality in Delhi and North Delhi regions has deteriorated significantly in the past few days.
The thick layer of smog and the increasing level of air pollution have led to wheezing, difficulty of breathing and choking. Inhaling this polluted air is very dangerous for all but especially for children whose lungs are still developing. It also destroys their immune system leading to infection, sneezing and wheezing.
Expert Tips to keep your lungs healthy -
1. Use face masks: Using N95 face masks while going outside, especially during high pollution seasons like Diwali, or stubble burning, can reduce the exposure to harmful particles.
2. Avoid Pollution: Plan your outdoor activities such that the exposure to pollution is minimum. Usually Air Quality is harmful either in the early mornings or in the evening hours, so planning your activities for other times of the day can help minimize your exposure.
3. Use an air purifier- This is the best way to fight pollution because it removes allergens such as smoke, dust, chemicals, etc. You can easily breathe the fresh air in your home and stay away from the smog that covers the outside.
“With the ill effect on the respiratory tract, it also affects the hair and skin and makes it dry. Try to cover it with clothes or use moisturizing lotions to prevent the skin from being dry. Oil and wash your hair regularly,” Dr Kuldeep said.
