Coffee consumption is instrumental in reducing the risk of respiratory illness, cancer, diabetes, and dementia
Drinking at least three cups of coffee daily can extend your lifespan by at least two years, according to a new study. The review, published in the journal Ageing Research Reviews, conducted by the University of Coimbra in Portugal, analyzed 85 studies worldwide examining coffee’s impact on health.
According to the analysis, three cups can add nearly 1.84 years of life spent without serious illness.
Previously also it has been shown that coffee can prevent heart attacks and reduce the risk of liver diseases. Researchers also said consumption of the caffeine-rich beverage is instrumental in reducing the risk of respiratory illness, some cancers, diabetes, dementia, major depression, and frailty.
Why can coffee increase longevity?
According to scientists, coffee, loaded with antioxidants, reduces the chemical deterioration of healthy cells and allows them to recover better after being exposed to inflammation. Studies say coffee is packed with at least 2,000 bioactive compounds, like polyphenols, linked to reducing inflammation and regulating insulin production.
“While both caffeine and non-caffeine components of coffee can help extend a healthy lifespan, there is still much we don’t know about the exact mechanisms behind the role these components play,” the authors of the study wrote. Apart from the beneficial compounds, coffee also influences genes, making it beneficial for you.
Why should you drink three cups?
According to experts, three cups of coffee made with good-quality roasting and coffee beans can affect the amount of caffeine in the coffee. The study authors noted that the European Food Safety Authority considers up to 400 mg of caffeine daily, but women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have medical conditions should first consult their doctors.
Doctors said older adults should not increase their coffee consumption to improve their health, as too much caffeine can lead to symptoms like heart palpitations, high blood pressure, and anxiety.
The FDA also warns of overconsumption of caffeine, especially if you are allergic or sensitive. “There’s no difference in the way your body handles or the safety between the caffeine that occurs naturally in coffee and tea, for example, and what’s added to a product, so be sure to consider all sources of caffeine in your diet,” the FDA stated.
While decaffeinated coffees and teas have less caffeine than caffeinated coffee, they still contain some amount of caffeine.
