While it is well known that drinking Coca-Cola or Coke, one of the most beloved beverages, is harmful to health, it may actually be killing you, according to a new study. Conducted by the University of Michigan, the research explores the impact of ultra-processed foods on our lifespan.
According to researchers, certain ultra-processed foods shorten your life. For example, eating a hot dog could take 36 minutes, and washing it down with a Coke could add another 12 minutes. Breakfast sandwiches and eggs were found to subtract 13 minutes, while cheeseburgers could cut off 9 minutes.
Hotdogs in particular have a higher risk of cutting life short because they contain nitrites and nitrates, which are preservatives. Also, Coca-Cola is loaded with sugar—another factor for deterioration in health. Consuming too many sugary foods can lead to weight gain, which increases the risk of cancer.

Foods that add years to your life

Study says despite ultra-processed foods being detrimental to your good health, there are certain foods that you eat regularly that can add to longevity. The research highlighted that eating certain types of fishlike Salm could add 28 minutes to your life, offering a healthier alternative.
“The urgency of dietary changes to improve human health is clear. Our findings demonstrate that small, targeted substitutions offer a feasible and powerful strategy to achieve significant health and environmental benefits without requiring dramatic dietary shifts,” said Dr. Olivier.
A healthy diet that includes a variety of foods can help you live longer. Some foods that may help increase longevity include:
  • Whole grains
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Legumes and beans
  • Tomatoes
  • Olive oil

How do ultra-processed foods cause health problems?

Experts say ultra-processed foods lead to health issues, especially heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Those who regularly consume calorie-, sodium-, and preservative-laden food have an overall lower-quality diet and a greater body mass index than those who eat fewer ultra-processed foods. The ultra-processed foods mostly consumed include:
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages
  • Processed meats like hot dogs, sausages, and deli meat
  • Carbonated soda drinks like Coca-Cola
Doctors say there is at least a 12 per cent greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes by eating ultra-processed foods. UPFs are also connected to a 21 per cent higher risk of death from any cause, obesity, and a 40-66 per cent greater risk of heart issues like heart attacks and strokes.
Other health concerns tied to these foods included sleep problems, depression, asthma, high cholesterol, and gastrointestinal issues. Doctors are particularly worried about a sharp rise in colon cancer cases in more young people, which some suggest is linked to their increased intake of ultra-processed foods.
While UFPs can be enjoyed in moderation, doctors still recommend prioritizing healthier foods.
