Even though most brands today use certain lingo on their packaging for marketing purposes, it does not guarantee that you are getting a healthy food item
Grocery stores help you not just easily choose foods that you want to buy but also make your cooking quick and convenient. Everything you need to prepare a meal is under one roof, with loads of choice and plenty of ingredients - from canned soup to pre-cut fruit, vegetables, spices, and even processed and packaged to save time and make meal prep easier. However, according to experts, most of these ready-to-eat meals are best avoided.
Even though most brands today use certain language on their packaging for marketing purposes, it does not guarantee that you are getting a healthy food item. This is especially true with processed foods like cereals, frozen meals, bread, and many more. Experts say that, loaded with added sugars and saturated fats, these foods are slow poison for your body.
Here is a list of the most unhealthy items that you will find on the racks, to be best avoided:
Rusks
While most of us have grown up dipping rusks into our milk and tea, these are some of the unhealthiest foods that are available in varieties in grocery marts. Rusks are loaded with sugars and can cause various side effects, which include:
Weight gain
Rusks are packed with calories and can quickly add to your daily intake.
Digestive issues
Being very low in fibre, rusks cause hunger pangs and digestive issues like constipation.
Blood pressure, cholesterol
Rusks can raise blood pressure and cholesterol levels, which can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Masala oats
Masala oats are pretty delicious but can be extremely unhealthy as well. According to experts, these flavoured oats are loaded with sodium and preservatives, which make them highly unsuitable for daily consumption.
Apart from that, masala oats are also rich in maltodextrin, a processed white powder made of corn, rice, potato starch, or wheat, which is unsuitable for digestion and can cause diarrhoea, heartburn, or even long-term constipation.
Digestive biscuits
Even though they are tasty and addictive, digestive biscuits are best avoided as they are super unhealthy. The biscuits are highly processed and contain added sugar, refined flour, and high amounts of sodium.
Digestive biscuits provide little in the way of vitamins and minerals besides sodium.
Packaged soup
While it is the quickest and easiest way to make delicious, flavourful soups—especially in winter—the ones available in packets are super unhealthy.
Loaded with salt, which serves as a taste enhancer and a preservative, these soups can lead to problems like high blood pressure and complications in your kidneys. According to experts, you must opt for homemade soups or choose brands with low-sodium options for a healthier bowl.
Flavoured yogurt
Even though these are marketed as healthy and protein- and calcium-packed, flavoured yogurts are nothing but dollops of sugar. According to experts, these yogurts can have calorie counts similar to ice cream because they have added sugars.
So, either make them at home, adding fresh fruits, or opt for unsweetened, low-fat ones which are healthier.
