There’s a new trend brewing on TikTok. It’s called “proffee” and the hashtag #proffee has already received nearly 100 million views on the social media platform. The slow-motion videos, which end with a creamy beverage in a glass jar, make it look fun and delicious. But what is a proffee? Proffee is a popular beverage, blending protein with coffee, and the brewing of coffee with protein powder or shakes. This is made by mixing protein powder or a protein shake ready to drink, with coffee.
The coffee often comes hot or iced while the protein component may be whey, casein, or plant-based protein powders. The concept of creating Proffee is to have a beverage that will give energy from the caffeine in the coffee and assist in muscle repair from the protein. It has become popular among fitness enthusiasts and those seeking convenient, nutrient-packed beverages.
Some TikTok users are swearing for its benefits, including weight loss. But are the health claims actually true? We got in touch with experts like Akshata Chavan, Clinical Dietician at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central and Dr PN Chaudhary, Senior Consultant-Internal Medicine, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali who explains that though proffee can support satisfaction and weight loss due to its high protein nature, overuse can easily create digestive issues or excessive caloric intake if sweeteners are added. So who should have it and who should not try it no matter what? Let’s check!
Akshata Chavan shares that experts generally don’t recommend anything to be mixed with coffee as caffeine doesn’t really benefit any nutrient absorption. Meanwhile, Dr PN Chaudhary explains that proffee is healthy when taken in the right amounts. It provides the energizing effects of coffee while offering protein that aids in muscle repair, so it's a favourite among fitness enthusiasts. It may help in weight loss and improve satiety, but too much of it or loaded with sugar syrups and creamers could undo the good.
Who Should Not Try This?
Akshata shares that while for most, Proffee is suitable, it is not for everyone:
- Kidney Problems
Patients with kidney issues should avoid protein-rich diets without consulting their doctor. Excessive protein can put undue stress on the kidneys, worsening existing conditions.
- Caffeine Intolerance
People sensitive to caffeine may experience jitters, anxiety, or a racing heart when consuming coffee with protein, making it unsuitable for them.
- Lactose Intolerant or Allergic to Dairy
If the protein powder contains whey or casein, individuals with lactose intolerance may experience digestive discomfort, including bloating or cramps.
- People with Gastrointestinal Problems
The combination of coffee and protein can irritate sensitive stomachs, potentially causing bloating or other gastrointestinal discomforts.
- Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women
Caffeine and excess protein may not be ideal during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It’s best to consult a healthcare provider before adopting such diets.
Alternative Drinks For Proffee
Dr Chaudhary shares that for those who may not find Proffee suitable or are looking for alternatives, here are some other nutritious drinks to consider:
1. Smoothies
Blend protein powder with fruits, vegetables, and non-dairy milk for a refreshing, nutrient-packed drink. This option is versatile and can double as a meal replacement.
2. Golden Milk
A caffeine-free option made with turmeric, ginger, and milk (or non-dairy milk), golden milk is rich in anti-inflammatory properties and provides a warm, soothing alternative.
3. Matcha Latte with Protein
Matcha offers a milder caffeine kick than coffee and pairs well with protein for a balanced drink. It's packed with antioxidants for added health benefits.
4. Protein Hot Chocolate
This comforting beverage combines cocoa powder, protein powder, and milk to create a rich and healthy treat that satisfies sweet cravings.
5. Kefir Smoothie
Made with kefir, this drink promotes gut health while offering proteins and vitamins. It’s an excellent option for improving digestion while maintaining nutritional balance.
